How can we combine emergent curriculum with explicit teaching of symbolic systems? What could help us experiment with language and communication even as we learn its details and structures?
Reflections Small School offered ‘a project-based approach to learning for the first three years of school.’ It grew out of the Reggio Emilia influenced nursery and forest school, and extended this approach. Music and the Sea Monster began as a challenge for us as educators to see if we could work with the body, mind and senses to explore sound AND embed foundational understanding around the language of notation symbols. The project evolved over 6 months to include aspects of literacy and local geography, alongside sound, story and physical adveture.
